Getting Professional Help
Primary Care Physician
Your own primary care physician—the doctor you see for regular check-ups and most medical care—may be the best place to start. While your personal physician may not specialize in migraine, he or she probably knows the most about your medical history and can evaluate your condition to determine if you need a specialist for further help.
Neurologist
Since a neurologist specializes in diseases of the brain and the treatment of disorders affecting the nervous system, he or she will probably be up to date on migraine treatments.
Headache Specialist
While a headache specialist is usually also a neurologist, he or she can sometimes be an internal medicine specialist or other medical specialist.
Headache Centers, Clinics, & Treatment Programs
Since no national standards yet exist by which headache centers, clinics, and treatment programs can be evaluated, you may want to use these kinds of resources after you've consulted with a neurologist or headache specialist. Ask your healthcare professional if you have any questions.
